Filling of Annular and Annulus Space

Annular space grouting is the process of filling the area between a host pipe and liner pipe in re-lining applications and very common for grouting casings with internal conduits in electrical duct banks.

Annulus space grouting is the process of filling the area between a bore hole and host pipe, the area outside the host pipe. It is important to remember when pressure grouting an annular space, it must be done right the first time, since there is not a second chance.

Pressure grouting annular spaces pose additional challenges. Superior Grouting has mastered the art of annular/annulus space grouting with over three decades of experience. We have extensive experience in placing sanded grouts and cellular grout mix designs.

The Utility Line Grouting Procedure (Pressure Grouting) includes:

  1. Installation of injection / vent pipes
  2. Determine optimum mix design
  3. Specialized equipment for scope of work
  4. Experienced Technicians

Utility Line Deterioration

Underground utility lines deteriorate when they exceed manufacturers’ life of design expectancy. Once pipes are no longer structurally sound, this causes migration of groundwater and hazardous fluids into pipes which can result in a number of issues, including: utility line collapse; settlement of the ground surface, roadway structures and overlying structures; soil contamination; and environmental issues. A common fix for this is to slip line the pipe. A new host pipe is inserted it to the old pipe and the space between the new host pipe and old pipe will need to be grouted to prevent failure of the old pipe.
If not proactively maintained, pipes deteriorate and/or fail over time allowing soils to infiltrate joints, creating voids around pipes, resulting in ground surface settlement and differential movement to structures above, such as roadways, highways, buildings and other heavy structures.
Description (40 Words) If not proactively maintained, pipes are at risk of collapsing, resulting in migration of groundwater and hazardous fluids into and outside of the pipe potentially causing environment challenges, build-up of explosive gases and settlement of overlaying structures.

Annular and Annulus Space Grouting

Superior Grouting Annular and Annulus Space Grouting (Pressure Grouting) is used in a number of utility line applications from slip lining a pipe to filling the space around conduits in electrical duct banks. The process of grouting the annular/annulus space and is performed via injecting specially formulated cement-based mixes under low pressures. Whether the mix design specifications call for a Cellular Grout or Sanded Grout, Superior Grouting has the experience and knowledge to accomplish the most challenging of projects.

Common uses for Utility Line Applications (Pressure Grouting) include:

  • Slip Lining Projects
  • Annular Space Grouting
  • Annulus Space Grouting
  • Electrical Duct Banks

Benefits of pressure grouting:

  • Fast
  • Effective
  • Non-Invasive
  • Zero Excavation
  • Environmentally Safe

Compared to heavier grouts, cellular concrete is lightweight and highly fluid, resulting in the following advantages:

  • Ability to pump for long distances,
  • Minimal shrinkage,
  • Low hydrostatic and buoyant forces acting on carrier pipes, and
  • Virtually eliminates risk of incomplete filling or plugging of void spaces.
  • Extremely flowable and pumpable
  • Stability and strength with only minimal weight
  • Lower pumping pressures which reduces the risk of damage to pipe or structure
  • Requires fewer access points due to the fact it can be pumped over 5,000 feet – fewer access points mean lower costs and less disruption
  • Load reduction (vertical and lateral)
  • Minimizes future settlement
Pressure Grouting is the generic name applied to a number of applications requiring the pumping and injection of any number of variable grout mixtures. When a heavier, higher strength grout is required the use of sanded grout in a variety of mix designs can be utilized.
Annular space grouting is the process of filling the area between a host pipe and liner pipe in re-lining applications or casing with conduits on electrical duct banks projects. It is important to remember when grouting an annular space, it is important to do it right the first time, since there is no second chance. In addition, pressure grouting annular space poses additional challenges, due to the very small void space and length of runs encountered on these types of projects. Our company has mastered annular space grouting with over three decades of experience. We have extensive experience in placing sanded grouts and cellular grout mix designs.
Annulus grouting is the process of filling the area between the bored hole in the earth and the host pipe. It is important to remember when grouting an annulus space, it is important to do it right the first time, since there is no second chance. In addition, annulus grouting poses additional challenges, due to the very small void space and length of runs encountered on these types of projects. 39 Years of Service in Specialty Grouting

Established in 1983, Superior Grouting Services, Inc. is one of the best known and most reliable grouting contractor in Greater Houston and the Texas Gulf Coast Region. We are a family owned business established in 1983 to provide small line grouting services to general contractors serving the underground utilities, oil & gas, commercial & industrial properties, railroad and public works markets. Coming from the concrete boom pumping industry in the 70’s and early 80’s, the owner had extensive experience in the concrete pumping world. Having placed over one million cubic yards in the Houston market he saw a segment in the industry that needed a specialty contractor with the knowledge and expertise to execute conventional and non-conventional projects, thus Superior was born. Starting with one MaycoC30 small line grout pump and a 1969 Chevy Truck, the owner sold and completed each and every job. Superior is a performance-oriented company that works with engineering firms and general contractors and continues to evolve into becoming the exceptional specialty grouting company that it is today. The owner, Ron Rumpza, has diligently worked to grow the company through his persistence and dedication by providing excellent customer service with a quality finished product on time and on budget. The broad experiences of our principle employees combined with unique construction methods and materials, has made Superior an authority in the fields of pressure grouting, compaction grouting, chemical grouting and polyurethane.

FAQs

There are many variables to consider such as: diameter of pipe, volume of material required, size of annular space or annulus space, degree of inclination, size of staging area for grouting equipment and a number of other factors. Typically, Superior Grouting pumps distances ranging from 100 Lineal Feet to 2,000 Lineal Feet. In some specific applications, we have pumped material over a distance of 5,000 LF (~1 Mile).
There are a number of considerations. One critical factor is there is a limited amount of time to place the material required for any given distance. The number of access points is determined by the diameter of the pipe, length and volume of material.
No – the general contractor prepares the pipe for the grouting procedure by installing the injection/vent pipes, the grout plug and any other requirement necessary for the pressure grouting procedure.
Mix design specified by Project Engineer or a Superior Grouting mix design if no specification. Superior Grouting offers a library of mix designs that are each tailored for a specific project design. Depending on the specifics of the scope of work, the most applicable design is selected – either sanded or cellular grout.
Yes – Superior Grouting requires water to be within 200 feet of staging area or at a minimum access to a water source on the jobsite at no cost.
