Colonial Pipeline

CHALLENGE

Colonial Pipeline commissioned the abandonment of 1,365LF of 36-inch diameter pipeline and 1,430LF of 40-inch pipeline. The pipeline ran perpendicular under a section of the San Jacinto River, which was approximately 1,000FT wide at the line crossing. The only access points were at each end of the pipeline. In addition, there was a horseshoe shape drop near the center of the line with an elevation change of approximately 6 to 10 feet. The situation allowed for one opportunity to grout the line correctly.

SOLUTION

Superior Grouting was sub-contracted to execute the pressure grouting scope of work. The work was performed over two consecutive nights. Grouting was scheduled to commence at 2AM and to be completed by 10AM. Logistics, high volume-high pressure injection equipment, job specific mix design characteristics, a steady flow of ready-mix trucks, general contractor support and proper line set up, were all imperative for a successful grouting operation in order to provide a 100% finished product.
